FOLKLIFE consists of artists’ residencies alongside a multi-disciplinary curated programme of high-quality, inclusive and engaging outdoor arts events/interventions to be experienced and enjoyed by the people of Castlebar and Turlough and the surrounding areas. The residency and curated programme are inspired by the Museum Collection, the natural beauty of Turlough Park and the Great Western Greenway (Castlebar to Turlough)
FOLKLIFE – is one of fourteen projects funded by the Arts Council In the Open/Faoin Spéir 2021 – 2022 initiative, in response to the global pandemic and as the title suggests, opportunities to enjoy creativity in the open air all over Ireland.
IMBOLC the first of these events, took place at the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, Turlough Park on Sunday, January 30 in the lead up to the eve of Brigid. A limited audience attended a performative walk to celebrate the spirit of Brigid, the hopeful coming of spring and with it, the opportunity to start afresh. St Brigid promised fine weather from her feast day onwards. Spring, the season of hope and new life, brought better weather, longer days. With it came new life on the farm and new growth on the land.
Following on from Imbolc earlier this year, the final FOLKLIFE events on April 28th ART OF THE WORD and AIBREAN on April 30th, mark the halfway point between the spring equinox and summer solstice, when we come together to, once again, celebrate the changing seasons.
